The Mysterious Enos
(by Chris Masterson) Before there was Enos, there were the two people we commonly know as Adam and Eve. Genesis 5:3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat [a son] in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:
Tradition tells us two people populated the entire planet earth; their genealogy in Genesis 5 proves it! On the contrary, the genealogy of Genesis 5 is exactly that - a genealogy. It documents certain fine points of a particular family line. Be that as it may, it is one of thousands that existed at the time. But this one in particular belongs to those people from the garden, Eden. Seth was the first biological son of Adam and Eve. There is ample proof in the Hebrew text of Genesis; Cain and Abel were not fathered by Adam. [read the chapter, "Cain and Abel" of THE BIG PICTURE]
Before there was Enos, there was Seth. Howbeit, all we know is that he replaced Abel who was murdered by his brother, Cain. Hence, the first born of the man and woman in the garden assumed the coveted spot in the genealogy. The underlined text of the above verse supports this conclusion: Adam begat a son of his own; in his own likeness and after his own image. In contrast (regarding the two brothers), Eve stated in Genesis 4:1, "I have gotten a man with the LORD." However, the Hebrew text, "qaniytiy iysh (I did get (possess) [a] man)" is from the verb "qanah" - also translated "to purchase" when used in a different context.
In those days, a man's name defined him. "Seth (Sheth)" was so named because he took the place of Abel. Although, this name (noun) is found in Isaiah 20:4 thousands of years down the road, translated "buttocks (yes, your rear end)," at the time of Genesis 4 it meant "replaced." The trouble with Cain; he coveted that number two spot in the genealogy so that his first born, Enoch (Genesis 4:16), instead of Enos would occupy the third.
THE COVETED SPOT Genesis 5:6-11 And Seth lived an hundred and five years, and begat Enos: And Sēth lived after he begat Enōs eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Sēth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died.
Enōs lived ninety years, and begat Cainan: And Enōs lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enōs were nine hundred and five years: and he died.
According to the above text, Enos most certainly made his contribution to the population; and he spent 815-years doing it. The man finally died at the ripe old age of 905. Wow! Just seven years short of his father, Seth. Cain and Abel are out of the picture. But what more does the title name tell us? The Hebrew version is "Enosh (Enowsh)." If you look it up, you'll find it simply means: man. For example, Psalms 144:3 says: LORD, what [is] man, that thou takest knowledge of him! [or] the son of man, that thou makest account of him!
Notice, the word "man" appears in the verse, twice. The first occurrence is from the Hebrew, "adam," which more accurately means: mankind. Hence, adam is a collective plural noun; the word itself is singular but its implication is plural (e.g. people). However, the second occurrence is from ... you guessed it ... "enosh." The entire expression is "ben-enosh (son of man)". Sound familiar? "Son of man" is a title the Messiah of the gospels often claimed. But only a few people really know what exactly is meant by it. And explaining that is another article all by itself.
There are those more traditional thinkers who associate the name, Enos, with "wickedness." Genesis 6:4 states: There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men which [were] of old, men of renown.
In a nutshell, the giants mentioned in the verse are called, Nephilim (who stood an average 9-feet). Modern translation, the fallen ones. Traditional religion suggests they were fallen angels. Hence, they and the sons of God are one in the same. However, the not so modern translation defines Nephilim to mean: those who came down. But modern religion does not conform to people coming down from the sky of their own free will to mate with female humans. It puts a damper in their belief-system.
But if you'll take notice, the word "men" is mentioned three times in the above verse. The typical assumption is they are from the same Hebrew word and mean the same exact thing. On the contrary, the first occurrence is from the Hebrew, "ha'adam." In a nutshell, this refers to the man in the garden of Eden; his female descendants documented in Genesis 5:4. The second occurrence of the word "men" is merely implied. The Hebrew original is "ha'giboriym (the courageous [men])."
Finally, the third occurrence is the Hebrew word, "anesheiy[m]." This word refers to a specific group of men; the descendants of Enos. Hence, the daughters through Adam, Seth and Enos were specifically chosen as mates by the sons of God. Modern religious reference materials suggest this group of men was wicked in nature; like the sons of God who are assumed to be one in the same as the (alleged) fallen Nephilim. But if you dig deeper, you will find this word was initially translated, "homo." Now this word either refers to evolution or sexuality; and more specifically, homosexuality. Neither of which we are told the Bible ever endorsed. In conclusion, either one would be a good reason "the Nephilim" and "men of renown" were deemed "wicked" by those who endorsed traditional religion.
